Josef Opatrný
Training and professional experience
        Born in The Czech Republic. Magister in History, specialized in General History (1968). PhD in History at Charles University in Prague in 1978.
  • Between 1968 and 1990, he carried out research at vaious levels at the Centro de Estudios Ibero-Americanos of Charles University, where he has held the position of Director since 1990.
  • Director of the Editorial Board of the yearly book Ibero-Americana Pragensia(published by Charles University) since 1990.
  • As an invited researcher and lecturer he visited universities and research centres in Spain, Cuba France, USA, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Austria and Panama in addition to those in the Czech Republic.
  • Member of the Advisory Boards of various scientific journals worldwide.
  • Author of numerous books, scientific monographs and book chaptersand Symposiums Acts, as well as over 60 collectively or individually written essays featured in both Czech and international journals.
  • Author of contributions to over 40 scientific congresses worldwide.
Research lines
        As Head Teacher of the Centre for Ibero-American Studies he is coordinating research into the relationships between Central Europe and the Hispanic World in combination with two other projects funded by the Czech Ministry of Education. His research is particularly focussed on migratory processes, Czech migration in Latin America and cultural and economic relations between Europe and Hispanic America. Regarding American History, his main line focuses on USA-Latin America relations, cultural identities, race and nation-building issues. He has established close international scientific links as he coordinates the Caribbean Team's activities within the AHILA.
